C-9 – Drywall Contractor

A drywall contractor lays out and installs gypsum wall board and gypsum wall board assemblies including nonstructural metal framing members, and performs the taping and texturing operations including the application of compounds that adhere to wall board to produce a continuous smooth or textured surface.

Content of the Examination

The Drywall (C-9) Examination is divided into five major sections. These sections are:

1. Job Planning (15%)

  • Plans and specifications evaluation
  • Mathematical estimating calculations
  • Material types and quantities
  • Tools and equipment requirements
  • Site-specific requirements

2. Site Inspection and Preparation (13%)

  • Job readiness evaluation
  • Materials management
  • Job preparation
  • Property protection

3. Framing Assembly and Drywall Installation (28%)

  • Codes, plans and specifications
  • Control points, measuring and layouts
  • Installations (fastening, welding, furring and fastening)
  • Metal framing and door frames
  • Suspended drywall ceiling channels
  • Sound, fire rated and multi-layer applications
  • Drywall cutting and layouts

4. Taping and Finishing (31%)

  • Joint compounds and taping
  • Finishing applications and procedures
  • Texturing applications and procedures
  • Repairing surface techniques

5. Safety (13%)

  • Accident/fall prevention procedures
  • Tool and equipment operations
  • Scaffolding and ladders
  • Personal gear and clothing
  • Cal/OSHA requirements
