C-45 – Electrical Sign Contractor

An electrical sign contractor fabricates, installs and erects electrical signs, including the wiring of such electrical signs.

The Electrical Sign (C-45) Examination is divided into four major sections. These sections are:

1. Job Planning/Estimating (12%)

  • Sign criteria identification
  • Drawing development and interpretation
  • Sign engineering
  • Sign component selection

2. Manufacturing (35%)

  • Sign pattern types and techniques
  • Letter retainer systems
  • Sign assembly
  • Electrical requirements
  • Sign cabinet fabrication
  • Field surveys

3. Installation (42%)

  • Neon cabinets and channel letters
  • Electrical installation, connection, and troubleshooting
  • Monument and pole signs
  • Excavation and concrete requirements

4. Safety (11%)

  • Electrical hazards
  • Personal protective equipment
  • Hazardous substance handling/disposal
  • Cal/OSHA requirements for working in elevated spaces
