C-33 – Painting and Decorating Contractor

A painting and decorating contractor prepares by scraping, sandblasting or other means and applies any of the following: paints, papers, textures, fabrics, pigments, oils, turpentines, japans, driers, thinners, varnishes, shellacs, stains, fillers, waxes, adhesives, water and any other vehicles, mediums and materials which adhere by evaporation and may be mixed, used and applied to the surfaces of structures and the appurtenances thereto for purposes of decorating, protecting, fireproofing and waterproofing.

The Painting and Decorating (C-33) Examination is divided into six major sections. These sections are:

1. Painting Project Planning and Estimation (28%)

  • Assessment of job site conditions
  • Materials selection
  • Materials calculation
  • Equipment and tools

2. Minor Demolition and Repair (11%)

  • Causes of paint failure
  • Substrate repair
  • Removal of wallcoverings

3. Surface Preparation (23%)

  • Site protection
  • Preparation of sound surfaces
  • Preparation of contaminated surfaces
  • Preparation of failed coatings
  • Preparation of surfaces for wallcovering
  • Pressure washing
  • Repair of holes and cracks

4. Paint Application (14%)

  • Application of primers
  • Application of finishes
  • Application of specialty coatings

5. Wood Staining and Finishing (7%)

  • Exterior surfaces
  • Interior surfaces
  • Refinishing

6. Safety (17%)

  • Hazard identification
  • Elevated work
  • Personal protection
  • Waste disposal
