C-16 – Fire Protection Contractor

A Fire protection contractor lays out, fabricates and installs all types of fire protection systems; including all the equipment associated with these systems, excluding electrical alarm systems.

The Fire Protection (C-16) Examination is divided into four major sections. These sections are:

1. Design and Pre-Installation (33%)

  • Estimating and job planning
  • Design of underground systems
  • Design of overhead wet sprinkler systems
  • Design of dry and pre-action systems
  • Design of special hazards systems

2. Fabrication and Installation (37%)

  • Material listing and selection
  • Installation of underground systems
  • Installation of overhead systems and seismic requirements
  • Acceptance testing of overhead and underground systems
  • Acceptance testing of pumps

3. Testing and Maintenance (12%)

  • Testing and maintenance of overhead systems
  • Testing and maintenance of underground systems
  • Testing and maintenance of special hazards systems
  • Repair and replacement of fire suppression systems

4. Work Safety (18%)

  • Heavy equipment safety
  • Trench safety
  • Power tool safety
  • Personal safety
